EDC WorkShop coming to Columbia City

COLUMBIA CITY, Ind. — Thanks to assistance from a USDA Rural Business Enterprise Grant (RBEG), the Whitley County Economic Development Corporation (EDC) is establishing the EDC WorkShop in Columbia City. The EDC WorkShop Initiative will provide clients with customized coaching and mentoring, specifically in the areas of digital design and manufacturing, additive manufacturing, and/or lightweight and modern metals.

“We are specifically targeting these areas to help local manufacturers improve their competitiveness in existing technologies, and to assist companies in expanding their capabilities,” said EDC Small Business and Entrepreneurship Program Manager Bruce Stach. “It’s critical that companies keep up with the latest technologies and continue adapting their processes to compete in the global marketplace.”

The EDC WorkShop will house two centers – the Knowledge Center and Commercialization Center. The Knowledge Center will create awareness about new technologies and resources and connect clients with regional and state partners who specialize in areas in relation to the clients’ needs. Through the Commercialization Center services will be offered to move technologies and opportunities to market.

Although the WorkShop will be housed and developed at the Whitley County EDC offices, the EDC WorkShop Initiative encourages local, state and federal partnerships to work with companies on product and technology development. The WorkShop will engage partners from several areas including technology resources such as the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute, education resources such as the Purdue Manufacturing Extension Partnership and community and economic development resources such as the EDC, USDA Rural Development and the Indiana Small Business Development Center to name a few of the resources.

USDA awarded the Whitley County EDC $40,000 for programming for the EDC WorkShop Initiative and $20,000 for a low-interest revolving loan fund to be used by companies for projects related to the initiative.
